You’ve always loved horses. You’ve finally decided you’re ready to take the leap and buy the horse you’ve always wanted.
You’re excited, but a little overwhelmed. There’s so much to think about – and you should do all your thinking and planning before bidding on or buying a horse.
When you make such a large investment, you want to insure your investment. There are many insurance considerations when it comes to your new horse.
Have you thought about:
- Housing your horse?
- Your horse’s medical needs?
- Transporting your horse?
- Liability if your horse injures someone or damages property?
- Coverage for the purchase price of your horse?
Let’s dive into those issues.
Farm Insurance
Where you keep your horse effects your insurance needs. Whether you have a barn or stable or if you’re boarding your horse at someone else’s farm, you want to know your horse insurance needs.
If you own stables where you can keep your horse, you likely already have your barn covered under your horse farm insurance policy. This could include all your building structures and their contents, including livestock and tack.
If you’re boarding your horse at someone else’s farm, you want to make sure they have the right insurance. Ask them if their farm liability coverage is extended to include boarding of horses and if they have care, custody and control coverage.
Henry Equestrian
Just as you protect your own life with life insurance, you need horse insurance to protect your horse. Like people, horses get sick and injured. Unlike people, horses don’t have the same health benefits.
If your horse gets injured or becomes ill, a trip to the veterinarian can be very expensive. And in the worst-case scenario, you want to make sure you’re reimbursed if your horse dies.
Horse insurance can offer coverages such as:
- Full Mortality Coverage, insuring your horse for loss due to an accident, illness, injury or natural causes
- Protection against theft
- Liability for injury or property lawsuit claims, including defense costs
- Veterinarian reimbursement for costs related to the insured death of your horse
- Medical and surgical costs relating to accident, illness, injury or disease
- Disability
- Tack and equipment
- Stallion infertility
Transportation Coverage
If you’re moving your horse to its new home yourself, you’ll need a trailer. Your horse trailer also needs to be covered by insurance.
With Henry Equestrian, Powered by NFP, you can insure your new horse trailer under your Henry Equestrian plan policy. The Henry Equestrian policy would insure your trailer for collision, upset and specified perils coverage such as damage caused by fire, lightning, theft and windstorm. Once you attach your trailer to your truck, the liability coverage for the trailer would extend from the pulling vehicle.
We can also provide separate trailer insurance (depending on the type and use of your trailer), or a combined truck and trailer coverage. These policies would provide you with coverage such as:
- Liability and comprehensive coverage
- Protection against vandalism, theft and other types of damage
- Coverage for tack and other equipment stored in your trailer (if added to your Henry Equestrian policy)
- Cash value or full replacement options
- High limits of coverage
Liability and Injuries
When you own a horse, you need to worry about more than your horse’s health. You also need to worry about the health of those who come in contact with the horse, as well as potential property damage to others’ property. In these instances, you could be drawn into a lawsuit.
Even if you haven’t had a lot of experience with horses, you know they can sometimes act unpredictably. By making sure you have the right insurance, you’ll protect yourself from any financial issues due to a lawsuit or claim.
Our equine insurance policy covers liability up to $2 million.
