Horse Mortality Insurance

Your horse is important to you, and it’s a high-value investment. You want to make sure you protect your horse’s life.

What you’ll discover in this report:

  • Types of horse mortality insurance
  • Other types of coverages to consider

What Insurance Is Available for My Horse’s Life?

We offer two types of insurance for horse mortality.

First, there’s full mortality and theft insurance, which is very similar to a term life policy you’d purchase for yourself. This insures you against:

  • Financial loss due to the death by natural or accidental cause of your horse
  • Proven theft

Like many life insurance policies, there are qualifications for a policy in Canada. Depending on the insurer, based on the value of your horse, you may not require a veterinary certificate showing that your horse is physically sound and in good health. Different insurers may also have different coverages and conditions that pertain to age limits.

Secondly, you can purchase limited mortality insurance, call Specified Perils, which insures the death of your horse due to or necessitated by specified perils. These insured perils generally include:

  • Fire and lightening, or smoke that results from either
  • Collision, derailment or overturn of vehicles while in transit (includes loading and unloading)
  • Collapse of bridges and culverts
  • Earthquake and/or floods
  • Windstorm, cyclone, tornado and hail
  • Explosion
  • Aircraft and objects falling from aircrafts
  • Accidental shooting (except by you or your employees)
  • Drowning
  • Artificial electricity
  • Attack by dogs or wild animals
  • Building collapse
  • Theft (even if it doesn’t result in death)

NOTE: If your horse doesn’t qualify for full mortality and theft insurance, it can often be covered under Specified Perils mortality insurance.

What Other Coverages Should I Consider?

In addition to horse mortality insurance, you should also consider:

Surgical Endorsement

A surgical endorsement protects you from loss that occurs because of a surgical procedures your horse needs. This includes surgical fees charged by a licensed veterinarian that are reasonable and customary for the treatment delivered to save your horse’s life, better its health or treat an injury.

This can also include approved non-surgical medical fees that are applied for a specific period of time following surgery. Different insurers have different coverages, conditions and monetary limits, as well as applicable deductibles.

Medical and Surgical Endorsement

The medical and surgical endorsement not only protects you from loss related to surgical procedures your horse needs, but also medical expenses. This includes surgical fees charged by a licensed veterinarian that are reasonable and customary for the treatment delivered to save your horse’s life, better its health or treat an injury.

This coverage is usually subject to a deductible. Different insurers have different coverages, conditions and monetary limits.

Air Trip Transit & Berserk Insurance

If you’re transporting your horse for shows, breeding or other reasons using an airplane, you need to add short-term air transit insurance by endorsement to your full mortality policy. It’s also available with your Specified Perils mortality policy.

Worldwide Coverage Extension

If your horse will be kept outside of Canada and the US you will need to extend the coverage territory for the duration of their stay, as Canadian policies generally have territory limitations with the automatic coverage provided.
